- Description
- Many methods exist for the preparation of autograft material for insertion during tympanoplasty or tympano-mastoidectomy. These include compressing the graft material (e.g. temporalis fascia, tragal perichondrium) in a vein press, open drying directly under the operating theatre light, or via a hair-dryer, heater, or similar, amongst others. These all aim to optimise the graft into a dry, rigid and flat state, for ease of manipulation during insertion. We describe a novel method of preparation of the graft material with some distinct advantages. Both authors have used this technique effectively for many tympanoplasties and tympano-mastoidectomies, without any problems of note. This technique is safe, inexpensive, easy to perform with readily available equipment, and provides a quick method of achieving optimum graft condition for shaping and insertion.
